Closing the Door On Crime. Crime Prevention tip from WXPD

CLOSING THE DOOR ON CRIME
Detective Adam Osoro WXPD

Imagine being able to make one trip to the store and get everything you wanted…. ALL FOR FREE! Well folks, by leaving your garage and home unsecured, that’s exactly what you are providing for a potential thief. I have patrolled this wonderful city for many years now, and have grown fond of our small community charm. While on street patrol, I was surprised to see how many garages were left open at night as I patrolled our city. I regularly walked the neighborhoods at night and would find many items ripe for the taking - everything from bicycles, lawnmowers, tools, camping equipment and electronics. I’ve even found cars and ATV’s with the keys left in them! Remember, just because your belongings are inside a trailer, RV, or shed, you should still lock it.

While dealing with people who have become a victim of a theft, I often hear them say that they didn’t secure their belongings because they “just didn’t think anything would happen.” Woods Cross is a wonderful safe place to live so let’s all work together to keep it that way! Our community takes pride in itself for its beauty, but guess what? The bad guys notice too! We all like to have nice things and would hate to wake up in the morning only to find that something that we have worked very hard to buy…..IS GONE. The Woods Cross Police Department is dedicated to keeping a close eye on our city and protecting our residents. This is our HOME too. We spend countless hours checking doors and locks, day and night, to ensure that we are keeping you safe. In our small community, it is impossible for our officers to be everywhere every second. Please help us by securing your belongings. Here are some useful tips on how to protect yourself against theft:

 Close your garage door. (Day and Night)
 Keep bicycles and toys inside. (We know it’s difficult sometimes with children)
 Lock all exterior doors and windows. (Especially on ground level)
 Keep trailers and sheds locked. (Backing a vehicle close to the doors can help)
 Park vehicles in your driveway instead of on the street and LOCK THEM.
 Don’t leave any “tempting” items in view inside your car. (Phones, IPods, purses, wallets etc.)

That being said, if you don’t have a home security system, you may want to get one installed. There area many reputable companies that provide excellent systems at a low cost. Keep a watchful eye on your neighborhood and be sure to report any suspicious activity or vehicles in your area. Now I don’t want you all thinking that thefts are rampant in our city, because they are not. But unfortunately there are people in this world that would rather take your stuff than buy their own! Let’s work together at keeping our community safe and crime free!
