DATE / TIME OCCURRED: 06-08-12 at 9:55AM

LOCATION: E14th St at Dutton Ave San Leandro, Ca.

INVESTIGATING DETECTIVE(S): Det. Walton

SUSPECT(S): Two 16 year old Oakland residents

DETAILS:

On 06-08-12 at 9:55AM, a 19 year old victim was approached by two 16 year old suspects. One of the suspects asked if he could use the victim’s cell phone to call his mother. The victim handed over her cell phone and the suspects took the phone and fled the area on foot. The victim contacted the San Leandro Police Department and advised that her cell phone was taken and that it was equipped with the “Find My iPhone Application” which allows for a Global Positioning System to locate a lost or stolen phone. The victim was able to use a friend’s computer to access location information and advised the San Leandro Police Department that her phone was in the area of International Blvd and High St, Oakland. SLPD Detectives responded to the area where the phone was alerting and were able to stop a vehicle in which the suspects were passengers. During a search of the vehicle, the victim’s iPhone was located and the two suspects were positively identified by the victim. The juveniles were placed under arrest and transported to juvenile hall for grand theft and possession of stolen property.

Lt. Tudor said “This was a great example of how technology assisted law enforcement locate stolen property and arrest two individuals. This application has been a very useful tool for law enforcement as iPhones are a very popular item for those who commit thefts or robberies.”
