SUBJECT: Neighborhood Watch Program

DETAILS:

The San Leandro Police Department would like to encourage members of the community to get involved in and establish a Neighborhood Watch Program. Neighborhood Watch is an effective partnership between San Leandro residents and their Police Department to improve safety and prevent crime. Typically, a Police Department representative will make an appearance at a designated residence, agreed upon meeting place, or at the Police Department facility, and discuss:
• Crime trends in your neighborhood and San Leandro as a whole
• Safety and security of your home, person, vehicle, and children
• How to recognize and report suspicious activity to the police
• How to interact with neighbors in your group
Lt. Tudor said “Strong Neighborhood Watch groups are critical to public safety and are a force multiplier when preventing and investigating crime in our community. Members of the San Leandro Police Department are extremely grateful for the support and participation our community displays daily. We are looking forward to expanding our program and becoming more unified and proactive with crime and quality of life issues. For crime prevention tips or community policing resources, please go to the Police Departments website at www. Sanleandro.org. or contact Officer Tim DeGrano at 510-577-3247. “

On August 7, 2012, join members of your community, the San Leandro Police Department in the Annual National Night Out (NNO), sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Last year’s National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 15,000 communities. In all, it is estimated that in 2011 over 37 million people participated in “American’s Night Out Against Crime.”

NNO is designed to:
Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
Generate support for, and participation in, Neighborhood Watch Programs and other anti-crime efforts;
Strengthen neighborhood spirit and Police/Community relations; and
Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are fighting back against crime.

The National Association of Town Watch was established in 1981 as a nonprofit, crime prevention organization. The first National Night Out was introduced in 1984. San Leandro has a long history of participating in National Night Out. For more than 20 years members of the Police Department have been visiting neighborhood activities throughout the City. We would like to encourage members of the community to participate in the 2012 National Night Out.
If your homeowner association or neighborhood is planning something special on August 7th, members of the Police Department would like to stop by to introduce them-selves between the hours of 6:30 and 9:00 p.m. Please contact the Administrative Services Division.
