15 YEAR OLD ARRESTED FOR STOLEN VEHICLE AND EVADING POLICE.

Sandra Spagnoli Chief of Police
901 East 14th Street, San Leandro CA 94577

PRESS RELEASE

DATE / TIME OF RELEASE: 06-08-12 at 10:00AM CRIME: Stolen Vehicle Pursuit

PRESS RELEASE OFFICER: Lt. Jeff Tudor TELEPHONE: (510) 577-3232

DATE / TIME OCCURRED: 06-07-12 at 6:33PM

LOCATION: Huff Ave at Callan St, San Leandro, Ca.

INVESTIGATING DETECTIVE(S): Det. Walton

SUSPECT(S): 15 year old female, Oakland resident

DETAILS:

On 06-07-12 at 6:33PM, members of the San Leandro Police Department’s Street Crime Unit observed a 1989 Toyota Camry driving on Bridge Road. The vehicle was occupied with approximately 5 individuals. A license plate check of the vehicle revealed that it was stolen out of San Leandro. Upon noticing police presence, the stolen vehicle accelerated in order to get away from the officers. After a short pursuit in the areas of Bridge Road, MacArthur Blvd and Estudillo, the pursuit was cancelled due to the danger the vehicle was presenting to the public. During the pursuit the driver ran a stop sign and a red light. While attempting to pass on the left at the intersection of Bancroft and Estudillo, the suspect sideswiped the driver’s side of a Toyota pick-up waiting at the signal light. The suspect continued to drive away on Estudillo Ave. The occupant of the Toyota was not injured. A San Leandro Police undercover detective was in the area of Huff and Callan Ave an observed the vehicle pull over. All five subjects exited and fled on foot. The undercover officer attempted to detain the driver of the vehicle but she continued running ignoring the commands of the officer who was wearing a tactical vest with “Police” in bold letters across the front. The officer gave chase and was able to get the female in custody in the 500 block of Estudillo. The four other occupants were not located. The driver of the vehicle was arrested for possession of a stolen vehicle, evading, resisting arrest and hit and run.

Lt. Tudor said “Good judgment was used to cancel this pursuit as the 15 year old driver was clearly posing a danger to the public. It is fortunate that the undercover detective was in the area at the time the suspects abandoned the vehicle and that we were able to get the driver in-custody.”
