Bike Theft Suspect Arrested

Arrested: Erik Bahena, male Hispanic, 20 years, resident of Fullerton

On Sunday, June 3 at approximately 6:30 pm, Newport Beach Police Officers responded to a witness report of an individual spray painting a wall in the playground at Newport Elementary School located at 13th and West Ocean Front.

The responding officer contacted the suspect, who immediately fled on foot. Three other individuals seen with him walked off, as the officer chased the suspect. All three later were detained by responding officers, but were determined not to be involved.

The Huntington Beach Police Department air support unit, called in to assist in the search, located the male several blocks away on a bike that he had stolen in his attempt to escape. However, during the chase, the suspect discarded the bike, and then continued to flee on foot. He was apprehended in the area of 9th Street and West Bay Ave.

Erik Bahena was arrested for 496 (A) PC – Possession of Known Stolen Property. His bail amount was set at $20,000.
