PRESS RELEASE

DATE / TIME OF RELEASE: 05-31-12 at 8:45 AM CRIME: Annoying a Child

PRESS RELEASE OFFICER: Lt. Jeff Tudor TELEPHONE: (510) 577-3232

DATE / TIME OCCURRED: 05-29-12 at 11:45PM

LOCATION: Century 16 Bayfair Mall, San Leandro, Ca.

INVESTIGATING DETECTIVE(S): Det. Sgt. Sanchez

SUSPECT(S): Maurice Hastings, 55 year old, Oakland resident

DETAILS:

On 05-29-12 approximately 11:45PM, two children, 8 and 5 years of age, were with their aunt (21 years of age) inside of the movie theater. The three entered a photo booth to take a picture. As photos were being taken, the curtain to the booth opened and Hastings reached in as if he was going to grab one of the children. Hastings observed the adult female in the booth and began to walk away towards the exit to the theater. The aunt and her niece and nephew, exited the booth and were again contacted by Hastings who made a threat toward the aunt. The San Leandro Police Department was notified and officers responded to the area to look for Hastings. Hastings was contacted by police in the parking lot to the theater. Hastings ignored commands from an officer to stop so that he could investigate the incident. Several officers arrived on scene and assisted detaining Hastings. During a search of Hastings, a pipe commonly used to smoke illegal drugs was located. Hastings was eventually arrested for annoying and molesting a child, resisting and delaying a police officer and possession of a device to smoke a controlled substance.

Lt. Tudor said “The quick actions of the aunt, mall security and theater staff allowed for officers to get to the scene quickly and locate Hastings. It is unknown what his motive was at this time, but we pleased that we were able to make an arrest and that nobody was injured.”
