SHERIFF’S OFFICE JOINS IDENTITY THEFT COUNCIL
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office is proud to announce a new partnership with the Identity Theft Council. This partnership provides free services to victims of identity theft, including in-person support and guidance.
Identity theft is a growing law enforcement and community problem. Most cases involve the theft of key pieces of a person’s identifying information, such as name, address, date of birth, and social security number. Identity thieves use the information to impersonate the victim, usually for financial gain. Once obtained, the thief can access the victim’s financial accounts, apply for credit cards or loans, receive social security benefits, and even establish services for utilities. Victims can suffer financial ruin and experience distress and frustration while trying to reclaim their identity.
The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office understands the financial burden, stress, and frustration that identity theft places on victims within our community. In partnership with the Identity Theft Council, the Sheriff’s Office can now offer victims of identity theft more support and guidance through the recovery of their identity and credit history.
The Identity Theft Council is a non-profit group of identity theft and security experts who volunteer assistance to victims of identity theft. The Council is a combination of victim support groups and neighborhood watch programs, providing identity theft victims with greater long-term support and recovery assistance in their local community, while at the same time helping to reduce the incidence of identity theft by improving local awareness and education.
