On 5-12-12, at 4:54 AM, officers were sent to a home in the 6900 block of Logan on a burglary in progress. A resident there had heard his garage door open and his dog barking. He checked his garage and found a WM crouching behind his truck inside the garage. The suspect fled. At 5:04 AM, an officer responding to the 6300 block of Stoneham on reported auto burglaries saw a white 1999 Dodge pickup pull out of an alley in the 6900 block of Achieve. A white male was the driver and only occupant. A check of the license number showed it registered to an address on Wolflin. The officer stopped the car in the 6700 block of Thunder. The driver was Colton Taylor Jones WM 19 of Amarillo. The officer noted a large amount of personal property in the vehicle’s passenger area: a case of energy drinks, a back pack, first aid kit, tools, a tool belt, a machete, a hatchet, a purse, and other items. Officers saw broken glass in the seat of the pickup. They knew that one of the auto burglaries being investigated in the area was committed by breaking the window to enter the vehicle. Officers recovered a .380 caliber semiautomatic handgun from the suspect’s pickup. This weapon was found to have been stolen from a vehicle parked inside a garage at a home in the 8300 block of Paragon. The purse in the pickup was found to be stolen from a vehicle parked inside a garage in the 6000 block of Windham. Some of the property found in the vehicle was identified as coming from two burglaries of garages that had just occurred in the 8200 block of Paragon. Colton Jones was booked into the Randall Co. Jail on preliminary charges of burglary of a habitation and theft of a firearm. Investigation into the property in the pickup and the burglaries in the area is continuing.
Investigation indicates that as many as three burglaries in the area were committed when a suspect was able to use a remote garage door opener taken from a vehicle parked in a driveway to gain access to the garage. Remember to remove your garage door opener from vehicles left parked outside. Locking the door to a vehicle may not protect the personal property inside the car. Thieves often break into locked cars by breaking out windows or damaging locks. The garage door remote allows criminals to easily gain access to your garage and home at any time of the day or night.
