Residents are asked to be on the lookout for increased gypsy crime activity during early summer months
During the late spring and early summer months, it is common to see an increase in gypsy crime and other confidence crimes primarily targeting seniors. A common ploy used by these criminal is to distract elderly residents working in their yards through small talk, while their partners enter unlocked doors looking for items to steal. Another ploy is to trick residents into hiring them to do odd jobs around the home, such as painting, cement work and driveway sealing. The criminals then overcharge for sub-standard work that usually washes away with the first rain or crumbles within weeks.
Although we have not had any incidents so far this year, there is a group active in the area. Residents are asked to be on the lookout for a maroon older model Chevy Pickup or SUV occupied by two white males in their 20-30’s and a white female. All three were described as appearing “Hispanic.”
Please do your part on keeping an eye out for the elderly residents in your neighborhood and reporting any suspicious activity to the police department immediately. There is a City Ordinance that requires anyone soliciting door to door to apply for a permit. The police department recommends against doing business with anyone that just appears at your door unless they have applied for a permit and been approved following our background checks. We also recommend locking your doors when outside working on your lawns. A little precaution goes a long way at keeping all of us safe.
