National Police Memorial Week - May 13-19, 2012

National Police Memorial Week is May 13-19. This year 162 names will be added to the national memorial in Washington D.C. Eight officers from California were killed in the line of duty in 2011. In 1962, President Kennedy proclaimed May 15th as Peace Officer Memorial Day. In honor of all those who have passed and including Menlo Park Police Officer John Lyle (1960), department employees will wear black mourning ribbons on their badges from sunrise May 13 to sunset on May 19. Some sobering statistics; since 1791 over 19,000 officers have died in the line of duty, every 53 hours an officer is killed in the United States, each year over 53,000 felonious assaults occur on officers. Pictured is a view of the National Police Memorial Monument in Washington D.C and photos taken at the San Mateo County Fallen Officers Memorial on May 9, 2012.
