A local woman was arrested on felony and misdemeanor charges after allegedly causing a disturbance and fighting with Garland County Sheriff’s Department deputies late Friday.
Cori Lynette Cook, 27, of 200 Springwood Road, B-3, was taken into custody at her residence around 10:30 p.m. and charged with a felony count of second-degree battery, punishable by up to six years in prison, and misdemeanor counts of resisting arrest and disorderly conduct.
Cook was still being held Monday in lieu of $4,000 bond and is set to appear May 22 in Garland County District Court.
According to reports, shortly before 10 p.m., GCSD deputy Matthew Wharton responded to the residence, located off Majestic Lodge Road, in reference to a disorderly female and arrived to see the suspect fighting with her mother, Treva Coble, inside the residence.
After speaking with Cook and Coble, they both agreed to stay separated so there would not be a further problem and Wharton left, but was dispatched back to the scene about 15 minutes later because the two were fighting again.
When he arrived, Wharton states Cook was standing outside, yelling and cursing at her mother and the neighbors. He told her to stop yelling or she would be placed into custody.
Cook allegedly stated, “You can’t arrest me and I don’t have to listen to you” and then ran inside the residence. Wharton states he attempted to stop her at that point “due to officer safety issues.”
Cook became combative while running up the stairs, the deputy states, and when he told her to stop fighting she kicked him on the chest and upper thighs. Wharton used a short burst of pepper spray to her face and again told her to stop fighting and put her hands behind her back.
Cook allegedly began punching and kicking the deputy on the torso, chest and upper thighs and he warned her if she didn’t stop he would have to use his baton. She continued to resist and he struck her several times on the outside lower thigh.
She continued to fight as Wharton placed her on the ground and attempted to handcuff her. At that point, GCSD Sgt. Joel Ware arrived and assisted the deputy in taking Cook into custody.
After he was back at the sheriff ’s department, Wharton notes he noticed minor redness to his upper thighs, chest and torso sustained during the fight.
