Monday May 7th started California Police Memorial Week. Thousands of officers around the state and beyond were in Sacramento yesterday to pay tribute to the officers who have given their lives in the line of duty in 2011. Last year in California, 10 officers were killed protecting life and property. Nationwide, according to the National Law Enforcement Memorial website, 166 officers were killed in the line of duty. This is a 15% increase from the previous year! Our officers are enshrined on the memorial walls in California and Washington DC.

Members of the San Leandro Police Department were in Sacramento to honor the fallen officers and their families. Lt. Tudor said “It was an emotional day and it was truly an honor to support those who have given their lives in the performance of their duties as a law enforcement officer. Behind every badge, shield, or star there is person who loves, laughs and cries like everybody else. We are sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, friends and family members, whose lives are dedicated to public safety and improving the quality of life to those we proudly serve.

Please join the Police Department in honoring our three fallen officers who sacrificed their lives to protect this city by stopping by the Public Safety Memorial in front of the Police Department any time during the week. The three San Leandro Officers memorialized on our wall are:

Officer Donald Spingola (End of Watch 09/29/69)
Officer Nels Dan Niemi (End of Watch 07/25/05)
