Advisory

Grosse Pointe Lakeshore Optimist Club honors Harper Woods police employees and resident, Amari Young.

Detective James Ruthenberg, Dispatcher Barbara Skalba, and Harper Woods resident Amari Young received Certificates of Recognition from the Grosse Pointe Lakeshore Optimist Club at their Respect for Law breakfast this morning. The Optimist Club annually recognizes local law enforcement personnel and residents of the community whose actions contribute to the greater good, and increase the public’s respect for the law.

Dispatcher Skalba and Amari Young were honored for their cooperative actions when helping in the apprehension of three felons. Amari is an 11 year old who called 911 when her home was being broken into. Amari protected her younger brothers by hiding them in a closet and contacting the Harper Woods dispatch center. Barb Skalba answered the 911 call, immediately dispatched police officers to Amari’s home, and kept Amari calm while the officers were responding. Amari was honored for her quick thinking and decisive actions in protecting her brothers, and knowing what to do in an emergency. Barb was recognized for her professionalism, concern, and skill in working with Amari. As a direct result of Amari and Barb’s actions, three dangerous felons were removed from the community. This incident received nationwide attention as an excellent example of the importance of children being taught what to do when they need help.

Detective Ruthenberg was honored for his actions in helping save the life of a Ferndale police officer. Ruthenberg was off-duty and observed a Ferndale police officer in a violent struggle with an attacker. The Ferndale officer was on the ground fighting to keep his assailant from removing the officer’s handgun from his holster. Detective Ruthenberg, without regard for his personal safety, ran to the Ferndale officer’s aid, pulled the suspect’s hands off of the officer’s gun, and assisted the officer in subduing the attacker. Detective Ruthenberg has been nominated for the Michigan Fraternal Order of Police Officer of the Year for his actions.

Congratulations to all three of our recipients, they are a source of pride for our community.

Jim Burke
Chief of Police
