Early Morning Traffic Stop Leads To Arrest of Cushing Residents
Cushing – An early morning traffic stop by Cushing police officer Matthew Piatt has lead to the arrest of two Cushing residents. Arrested were Timothy Scott Murrell, Jr., 29, and Julie Renee Haikey, 21. Both were arrested on numerous drug charges.
Officer Matthew Piatt stopped a car being driven by Murrell in the 1000 blk N. Linwood Street after observing a series of traffic infractions. Murrell, who had been arrested by police in late April for similar offenses and was out on bond, was arrested for operating a vehicle without a valid driver’s license and no insurance.
During the traffic stop, Haikey opened the passenger door and attempted to conceal a clear zip lock baggie containing several smaller zip lock baggies by her feet. One of the baggies contained a white powdery residue. Haikey was arrested for drug possession.
At the Cushing Jail, Haikey was found to be in possession of drug paraphernalia. Haikey was also found to have been concealing two baggies containing a crystal type substance and container containing a green leafy substance in her groin area when checked by jailer Brooke Cackler. The crystal substance tested presumptive positive as methamphetamine and the green leafy substance tested presumptive positive as marijuana. All seized substances believed to be illegal drugs will be sent to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation for further analysis.
Murrell was booked into the Cushing Jail for driving without a valid drivers license, transporting an open container of beer, possession of marijuana, second or subsequent offense, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of CDS (methamphetamine), possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of CDS without a tax stamp, and removing a label from a CDS container.
Haikey was booked into the Cushing Jail for possession of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of CDS (methamphetamine), possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, possession of CDS without a tax stamp, and removing a label from a CDS container.
“Excellent job by Officer Piatt,” Chief Terry Brannon said. “I also want to commend Sgt. Jobe, MPO Sappington and Jailer Brooke Cackler for their work in this investigation too. Methamphetamine is ruining so many lives so the work of these officers should be commended because some of it was removed from our streets. If this arrest prevents one person from getting what Murrell and Haikey allegedly had packaged for sale then these officers may have possibly saved one more life in Cushing,” Brannon said.
Both were held in the Cushing Jail overnight and taken to the Payne County Sheriff’s Department this morning. Both were expected to appear in court this afternoon.
