SUSPECT: Raul Acosta, 21 years old, Oakland resident

DETAILS:

On 04-28-12 approximately 03:02AM, members of the San Leandro Police Department were conducting traffic control in 300 Block of Park St. for a vehicle fire. While on a traffic post, an officer observed a 1990 black ford mustang accelerate through a stop sign at a high rate speed and turn southbound on to Park St. from Belleview. As the vehicle accelerated away from the scene it nearly struck a SLPD officer directing traffic. SLPD officers drove after the vehicle and stopped the vehicle in the area of Davis St. and San Leandro Blvd. The driver was contacted and identified as Raul Acosta. Acosta displayed the objective symptoms of being under the influence of alcohol. A records check revealed that Acosta was driving on a suspended license and that he was currently on parole. There were three other passengers in the vehicle including Acosta’s one year old baby. Acosta was arrested for driving under the influence, child endangerment and a parole violation. One of the other passengers (20 year old Oakland resident) was arrested for an outstanding traffic warrant.

Lt. Tudor said “The decision to drive while under the influence with a small child in the car and others could have been tragic. Thankfully, the officers were able to stop the vehicle before serious death or injury happened to the occupants in the vehicle or to someone driving on the roads that morning.”
