BE PREPARED DURING TORNADO SEASON
The Northfield Twp Police would like to remind all residents and community members that in the event of a severe weather warning sound to take cover due to a tornado sighting or serious thunderstorm; the Northfield Twp Public Safety building can provide a temporary refuge. Community members can utilize the Public Safety building as their Short Term Safety Evacuation Site. Those wishing to seek safety in the Public Safety building will enter through the front doors of the facility, go to the basement and register with the Public Safety Emergency official.
BE PREPARED DURING TORNADO SEASON
Tornadoes are violent storms that can leave behind devastation and fatalities within seconds. Winds can travel up to 300 miles per hour and the path of the tornado can reach a width greater than a mile. .
A tornado watch is issued whenever conditions exist for severe weather to develop. A watch gives you time to plan and prepare.
A tornado warning is issued by the local Weather Service whenever a tornado has been sighted or the NWS Doppler Radar indicates. You must act immediately when you hear the warning signal.
During a tornado warning FEMA recommends that:
If you are in a building:
• Go to the basement, if no basement is available; go to the center of an interior room at the lowest level away from corners, windows, doors and outside walls
• Get under a sturdy table & cover your neck and head with your arms
• Do not open windows
In a high rise building:
• Go to the lowest level and to a small interior room or hall
In a mobile home:
• Get out and get to the closest building or community shelter such as the Northfield Public Safety building.
If outside:
• Get into a vehicle, buckle your seat belt and attempt to drive to a shelter
• If your vehicle is hit with flying debris, stop and park your car
• Stay in the car with your seat belt on. Put your head down below the windows; cover your head with your hands and a blanket or coat
• If you can safely get to a lower level of ground, leave your car and lay in that area with your head covered with your hands
• Stay out of an overpass or bridge. You are safer in low, flat location.
