AFD EMS Transport from Coast Guard Island for Injured Sailors

The Alameda Fire Department responded to the USCGC Bertholf, based at Coast Guard Island, for the transport of two injured sailors to a local hospital. The sailors were injured 400 miles off the California coast while competing in an around the world sailboat race. The sailors were injured when the boat they were crewing on, the 70 foot Geraldton Western Australia, was damaged in heavy seas. The USCGC Bertholf traveled 800 miles round trip on this rescue mission.
