** This is an updated press release to the Sexual Assault that occurred on March 20, 2012 ***
The San Leandro Police Department announces the arrest of a suspect that committed a sexual assault on March 20, 2012 in the 700 block of Bridge Rd in San Leandro. On March 21, 2012, Claysor Diaz, 21 years old of Oakland, was arrested by San Leandro Police detectives on drug related charges, in addition to an Immigration hold. DNA analysis in this case was submitted to the Alameda County Crime Lab last week and today the lab confirmed that DNA located at the crime scene belonged to Diaz.
Detectives have worked tirelessly on this case for the last week and department resources have been shifted to solve this violent crime. A key piece of evidence in this case is an image of Diaz by a neighborhood surveillance camera and a City traffic camera, placing Diaz at and leaving the crime scene. San Leandro Police Detectives located Diaz driving a vehicle matching the description of a possible suspect vehicle leaving the crime scene, in Oakland on March 21, one day after the crime occurred. Diaz was contacted and found him to be in possession of methamphetamine. Diaz has no criminal history.
“The San Leandro Police Department places a high priority on public safety, protecting victims, and the pursuit and apprehension of violent offenders. This case was solved by good police work, technology and cooperation from the neighborhood,” said Acting Lieutenant Bob Sanchez.
Diaz has been booked in the San Rita Jail for rape, burglary, and home invasion robbery. The case will be presented to the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office on Monday April 2nd, and he will be arraigned early next week.
