On March 6, 2012, at approximately 1:20pm, West Monroe Police Officers responded to a 911 call from a victim reporting a Carjacking that had just taken place in the 500 block of Gulpha Dr. in West Monroe. The Victim advised Police Dispatchers that he had jumped back into his vehicle as the assailant sped away from the scene and continued to relay the current location of the Suspect and his vehicle as the Suspect was trying to flee from responding Officers.
As Officers quickly arrived they located the victim and the suspect at the intersection of Mallard St. & Audubon Street, still in West Monroe. The victim promptly identified the Suspect who was running away from the scene as additional Officers were arriving. The Suspect who was later identified as Stewart E. Kelly Jr., was apprehended and taken into custody without incident.
Shortly after being arrested Kelly was taken to the West Monroe Police Department to be interviewed by Detectives. While being interviewed Kelly admitted he entered the victim's truck with the intent to steal the victim's cash and car stereo.
Kelly was booked into the West Monroe Correctional Center for: Carjacking, Simple Robbery, Theft, Careless Operation and Driving without a Drivers License. He was later transferred to the Ouachita Parrish Correctional Center and is being held awaiting bond to be set.
