On February 23, 2012 at approximately 5:17 p.m., the Subway Store located at 19548 Kelly Road in the City of Harper Woods was robbed at gunpoint. The suspect was able to flee the scene without being apprehended. Through an intense investigation and help from the community and the media, the Harper Woods Police Department was able to identify and arrest WALTER MUHAMMAD for this robbery. MUHAMMAD, a 34 year old Detroit resident, was formally charged on Wednesday February 29, 2012 with the following:
Count 1: Robbery-Armed, penalty-up to life in prison.
Count 2: Weapons-Firearms-Possession By Felon, penalty-up to (5) years in prison.
Count 3: Weapons-Felony Firearm, penalty-(2) years mandatory in prison.
MUHAMMAD was also given a Habitual Offender status based on his prior felony conviction. Bond was set at $50,000.00 cash and a Preliminary Examination date is scheduled for March 14, 2012 at 1:30 p.m. in 32-A District Court.
Harper Woods detectives were also able to develop information that implicates MUHAMMAD in a 2007 attempted bank robbery of the Chase Bank on Kelly Road in our city. We anticipate MUHAMMAD will be arraigned on attempted bank robbery charges when he appears for his exam on March 14, 2012.
