UPDATED - Monroe / West Monroe Swift Water Rescue - Attempted Suicide

On 02/28/2012 subject Mark Sanford of West Monroe was transported to St. Francis Hospital downtown as a result of jumping off of the Lea Joyner Bridge. Sanford was treated by St. Francis medical staff and was subsequently released later still on 02/28/2012.

On 02/28/2012 at approximately 5:40pm both the Monroe and West Monroe Police Departments jointly responded to the Lea Joyner Bridge in reference to a report of a white male who had apparently jumped from the bridge.
Witnesses advised arriving officers that they had observed a white male jump from the bridge in what appeared to be an attempt on his own life. Once in the water the male, who had survived, clung to a floating tree limb until rescuers arrived.
Both Monroe and West Monroe Police Rescue boats were launched and arrived in the area where the male was quickly located and subsequently pulled to safety.
Once on shore subject was treated for his injuries and was transported to St. Francis Hospital, down town to be evaluated.
The subject is a 49 year old white male of West Monroe whos name will not be released.
No criminal charges are pending at this time.
