Massive boulder begins 11-day journey through San Gabriel Valley- to be part of Michael Heizer's 'Levitated Mass'
A huge boulder that will become part of an art installation at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art begins its 11-day journey tonight from a quarry in Riverside County through 22 cities, including many in the East San Gabriel Valley and Whittier area, museum officials announced.
The 340-ton, 22-feet-tall stone's slow ride across Southern California will block several lanes of traffic on Chino Avenue, Chino Hills Parkway, Pathfinder Road, La Mirada Boulevard and Leffingwell Road. But it will only travel at night and in the early morning hours on its way to the museum in west Los Angeles.
The boulder will be parked at La Mirada Boulevard and Leffingwell Road in La Mirada on Monday.
Steve Forster, La Mirada's public works director, does not expect any problems as the rock travels through his city. He said the county, the city's permitting agency, has acquired the proper permits from the museum and will be inspecting the move.
