Heighten your Awareness on Tax Scams
February can bring the excitement of tax refunds that will enable several an early escape from the cold, dreary days of winter. But beware, many attempt to take advantage of our eagerness to receive a refund.
Phishing emails using the IRS name and logo are being sent. A message regarding a tax refund, tax notification or special service will attempt to encourage recipients to click on a link and log into the IRS website in order to complete a form needed to receive the tax refund.
• Do not click on the link
o If uncertain as to the legitimacy, go directly to the IRS site where legitimate notifications will be listed and available
• Do not open attachments
o Notifications from the IRS are usually sent by postal service.
o If in doubt, contact your tax preparer or the IRS and ask about the attachment
• Do not reply –
o Never give out Personal Information over the phone or through email without verification
o Request a name of the caller & contact information
• Forward suspicious emails to [email protected]
• Delete the email
*** The IRS does not initiate contact with taxpayers by email, text messaging or through social media in order to request personal or financial information.
