Advisory

Scam targeting elderly stating grandchild in jail in need of bail money - beware. Verify before sending any money.

An elderly woman in Conn. received a call from 438-994-9104 stating that her grandson was in trouble in Lima,Peru and she needed to send $2400.00 via Western Union to a receiver named Andrew Ammerate. This would be for bail so that the grandson would be released and not be sent to jail.
The caller urged the elderly woman to use Stop & Shop Grocery Store where the Western Union Office could easily be located for the money wire. The person on the phone identified himself as Officer Bob Daniels and when the Police Department called the number, it was answered by someone stating "Division 1" when the Police asked for Officer Daniels, the call was transfered and when Officer Daniels realized it was the real police he became rude and hung up. The elderly victim at one point was threatened by the caller.
The number 438-994-9104 is out of Quebec Canada.
Western Union and Stop & Shop Grocery should be on the alert for people trying to send money to "Andrew Ammerate".
