Rehabilitation of Public Sewers on Wallace Road to Begin on or about Wednesday, February 15th

Beginning on or about Wednesday, February 15, 2012, a contractor working for the Township of West Windsor, EN-TECH Corp., will begin sanitary sewer rehabilitation on Wallace Road. Rehabilitation will be in the form of a cured-in-place lining system. Lining is the insertion of a special material inside the existing sewer to create a new watertight, smooth-surfaced, long-lasting pipe within the old sewer pipe without significant excavation. Much of this work within the residential section of Wallace Road is expected to be performed during daytime hours, with night work occurring in the non-residential sections to minimize impacts at the train station and local businesses.

Limited Water Use Restrictions:
Because the lining material being used has to be heated in order to "cure" and make a solid pipe, the rehabilitation of each section of sewer line can take up to a 24-hour period to complete. During this time any sewer connection to a home or commercial establishment on the sewer line being rehabilitated will be temporarily sealed off by the new pipe. Properties directly affected by the work are #1 Wallace Road through #45 Wallace Road. Sewage from the home or business will remain in the service lateral and will not be able to enter the public main. Therefore, while the rehabilitation work is being performed on the sewer pipe to which these homes or businesses is connected, affected property owners have been asked to avoid water use as much as possible.

Again, properties directly affected by the work are #1 Wallace Road through #45 Wallace Road. These properties have received advance notice, and will receive a final notice in the form of a door hangar, advising when this restricted water use needs to begin. If you receive no notice, no change in your water usage is necessary.

Odors:

Please be advised that there is a slight chemical odor to the lining material used, similar to modeling glue. This odor should be limited to the outdoors, and should not be noticed inside a property because plumbing contains “traps” that prevent sewer gases from entering a building. However, to make sure you are not bothered by odors inside your house, please be sure to pour several cups of water into any sink or shower drain that is not regularly used. This keeps the "trap" full of water and working to prevent sewer gas and odors from coming into a building.

Public Water:
Public water will remain available at all times to all properties. During the work the contractor will be making use of large volumes of water, which may disturb existing sediments in the water lines in this area of town. This may result in a slight discoloration to the water, similar to when the water utility conducts their hydrant flushing program. If this happens it is not harmful. Unless you are one of the affected properties under water use restriction, simply let your water run until it is clear.

Traffic Control:
During this time there will be trucks and equipment parked in the roadway, requiring the closure of portions of the road for at least a 24-hour period. Due to the large diameter of the sewer main being rehabilitated it will also necessary to set up temporary by-pass pumps and run discharge lines overland in the area. The pumps will only be operated when necessary, but the discharge lines will be in place for the entire project.

As a result of this work, local residents may experience minor delays in gaining access to their driveways, local businesses, and to the Train Station. All sections of Wallace will remain open to local residents, emergency vehicles, mail delivery, garbage trucks, and school buses. The Town and Contractor will make every attempt to minimize disruption to residents, businesses, and motorists during this time. The contractor will be utilizing traffic safety measures to protect his work as well as insure the safety of the general public. Please slow down when travelling through the area and obey all posted traffic control measures.
