MEDIA RELEASE – JANUARY 26, 2012 READINGTON MAN CHARGED WITH BURGLARY

MEDIA RELEASE – JANUARY 26, 2012
READINGTON MAN CHARGED WITH BURGLARY

Readington Township Police Chief Sebastian Donaruma and Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III announce the arrest of John A. Mortarulo, age 48, of Readington Township for burglary and theft.

According to Prosecutor Kearns, “The Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office formed a Burglary Task Force comprised of detectives from Hunterdon, Somerset, Mercer, Middlesex, and Warren Counties, as well as officers from Pennsylvania and the New Jersey State Police, in an effort to address the growing number of burglaries within Hunterdon County.”

Chief Donaruma stated, “On January 19th, Readington Police investigated a burglary at a residence on Fieldstone Lane. Detectives and officers worked diligently and with the help of tips from the public, a suspect was developed and surveillance was initiated. The surveillance led police to Piscataway Township in Middlesex County where Mortarulo was observed in an act of committing a burglary. Readington Township Officers and Task Force Members apprehended Mortarulo a short distance from the scene. Mortarulo was in possession of proceeds when he was arrested. He was charged by Piscataway Police with Burglary and his bail was set at $50,000. He is currently lodged in the Middlesex County Jail.”
Chief Donaruma added, “We will use the full resources of our department to apprehend anyone who chooses to victimize our residents. The pursuit of a criminal does not end at the border of our town. The Readington Township Police Department is vigilant in the pursuit of those that commit crimes in our township.”

Prosecutor Kearns stated, “This is an excellent example of agencies pooling resources in a coordinated effort which resulted in the successful apprehension of a career criminal. I commend the Readington Township detectives that were vital to the success of this investigation. We remind residents to continue to be vigilant. If anyone sees anything suspicious or out of the ordinary, notify police immediately.”

The filing of a criminal complaint is merely a step in the criminal justice process. The defendant is presumed innocent until the matter is resolved in a court of law.
