Arrest Made Using "Shotspotter" Technology
Century station’s “Shotspotter” recently registered gunshots in the Willowbrook area. Deputy Sheriffs quickly responded to the location and saw a suspect fleeing from the location, carrying a handgun in his hand. The deputies utilized verbal orders, but the suspect refused to stop fleeing. The suspect eventually discarded the handgun and was arrested without incident. Evidence of a shooting and the loaded firearm were both located during a subsequent investigation. The suspect later admitted to shooting the gun in the air.
The “Shotspotter” is an acoustic gunshot detection system that incorporates acoustic sensors with a computerized mapping system. Designed to assist law enforcement with the ability to locate gunfire and immediately apprehend suspects, “Shotspotter” pinpoints the location of gunfire within a 5-foot area within seconds after the occurrence. The “Shotspotter” has assisted Century station on numerous occasions by allowing an immediate response to illegal shootings in progress. The detection and arrest of armed persons by Century station personnel has contributed to the overall reduction of violent crime.
