Deputies Exchange Gunfire With Suspect in Bellflower Deputy-Involved Shooting

Detectives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department Homicide Bureau are continuing their investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Deputy-Involved Shooting which occurred on Wednesday, December 28, 2011, at the 4:30PM, in the 8800 block of Oak Street, Bellflower.

Detectives have learned that deputies from Lakewood Sheriff's Station responded to a call regarding a suspicious person looking inside of vehicles.

When deputies arrived, they observed a Hispanic male who matched the description of the suspicious person.

Deputies attempted to contact the person and he ran away. A foot pursuit was initiated with one deputy pursuing on foot, and another deputy pursuing in a patrol vehicle.

After a short distance the suspect crouched down, retrieved a firearm from his waistband, and shot at the deputies, missing them.
The deputies returned fire, striking the suspect several times.
The suspect was transported to a local hospital and is now listed in critical condition.

The suspect's handgun (a revolver) was recovered at the scene.

Whenever a Deputy-Involved Shooting occurs involving Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputies and it results in a wounding, multiple independent investigations immediately begin at the scene. These include separate investigations by the Office of the Los Angeles County District Attorney, as well as investigations by Sheriff's Homicide Bureau and Internal Affairs Bureau. Attorneys with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review also respond to the scene, and have full access to the facts known to the Sheriff's Department throughout every phase of these investigations. Once concluded, every aspect of the shooting is reviewed by the Sheriff's Executive Force Review Committee.

INVESTIGATING OFFICERS: Lieutenant Francisco, Detective Aguilera and Dectective Blagg of Homicide Bureau

DATE / TIME OF CALL: Wednesday / 12-28-11 / 1645 hours

Sheriff's Homicide Bureau detectives are en route to the 8800 block of Oak Street, Bellflower, to investigate the circumstances of a deputy involved shooting. The suspect was transported to local hospital, but his condition is not known.

No deputies were injured.

A handgun was recovered.
