Project Complete: No Traffic Restrictions
on US 27/Chester Boulevard in Richmond
RICHMOND, Ind. – The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Milestone Contractors have completed the highway reconstruction project on US 27/Chester Boulevard. All lanes of US 27 are expected to be open by tonight at the Whitewater River bridge near Sim Hodgin Parkway.
The $12.2 million Major Moves project has been significantly complete since May, but concrete repairs to the bridge were added to the project. Engineers assess the bridge to be structurally sound, but scaling and spalling of the concrete over many years had deteriorated the surface of the bridge. INDOT chose to replace the damaged concrete in order to improve the appearance and function of the sidewalks and roadway.
US 27 has been reduced to two lanes across the bridge since the repairs began in September. Finishing the bridge work officially completes the US 27/Chester Boulevard project.
The Chester Boulevard reconstruction followed the $28 million reconfiguration of the US 27 and Interstate 70 interchange, which replaced a partial cloverleaf with a single-point interchange.
The project spanned more than two miles south of I-70 to Sim Hodgin Parkway and the Whitewater River bridge. Widening of the roadway, a center turn lane, full-depth pavement replacement, new curbs, gutters, storm sewers, traffic signals and signage, as well as landscaping and decorative block wall, were all included in the project.
