Shots Fired By La Mirada Man Who Then Refuses to Surrender. Standoff Ends After Suspect Apparently Takes Own Life

(Correction: The 15900 block of Algeciras Drive, La Mirada was incorrectly identified as the city of Norwalk in initial news releases)

The barricaded suspect incident in the 15900 block of Algeciras Drive, La Mirada, which began Friday morning, concluded at 4:50 pm, Friday when the suspect was found deceased inside the garage of the location with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.

At 7:23 am Friday morning, Norwalk Sheriff’s Station deputies received a call of "shots fired" at the location.
Upon arrival, deputies were advised by the man's female roommate that the suspect had shot himself and that he had a history of suicide attempts.

After deputies arrived at the residence, deputies saw what appeared to be blood outside the residence. They contained the location (surrounded the neighborhood) and requested Special Weapons and Tactics deputies from the Sheriff’s Special Enforcement Bureau to respond.

As a precaution, deputies assisted La Mirada Unified School District personnel with the evacuation of nearby students at Los Coyotes Middle School, 1400 block of Mercado Avenue, La Mirada. Approximately 400 students were transported by bus to the gym at La Mirada Regional Park, 13810 La Mirada Boulevard, La Mirada.

Numerous request were made to the barricaded male White adult to exit the house and surrender. However, he refused to comply with their orders.

Volleys of tear gas were then sent into the location, to no avail.

Several times during the standoff, the suspect fired several rounds out of the house, the last shot being fired at approximately 12:50 pm.

At 4:30pm, when the final volley of tear gas failed to get the suspect to exit his residence, members of the Sheriff's Department's Special Enforcement Bureau used an Armored Response Vehicle to remove the door of the house and deputies entered the location.

Once inside, deputies found the suspect deceased of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. A gun was recovered. Deputies did not fire their weapons during the incident.

The investigation of this incident is continuing.
