Be safe and secure this holiday season
The Saddle Brook Police Department is urging resident to be alert and stay safe and secure during this holiday season.
Most crimes are opportunity based, so don't give criminals the chance. Some common sense items can keep you safer.
Lock your car door in parking lots (anywhere for that matter). Criminals can get in if they want, but why make it easy. They are more likely to just move on to an unlocked car given the choice.
Don't make your car a target. Do not leave items visible on the seats and floor. Place items in your trunk and leave the passenger compartment of your car as empty as possible. GPS's are a prime candidate for theft.
When walking to and from your car, do so with confidence. Look around and take in your surroundings. Keep your keys in your hands ready to use. Fumbling for your keys is a perfect opportunity for a criminal to act while you are distracted.
When shopping, DO NOT bring a lot of cash. Flashing cash is a sure way to catch some attention. Only take what you need or use credit cards and pay them off with the cash you would have brought with you. Only take the items you need with you. Leave the extras that you usually carry in your wallet or purse at home. In the event that they are stolen, the impact will be minimized.
Try to shop with a friend or two. There is strength in numbers. A lone shopper is definitely more of a target than those in a group. It is also harder to distract someone that is with others.
Do not leave your pocket book in a shopping cart for any length of time. It takes only seconds to snatch it and disappear into the crowds. Use your front pockets or a fanny pack instead.
Using some common sense while out and about can help you have a safe and more secure holiday experience.
