Flooding Alert/Street Closure – November 29, 2011
Due to the steady rainfall this date flooding has occurred in low lying and poor drainage areas. The rain-snow showers are expected to continue throughout the next 24 hours. Anita between Mack and Helen has been temporarily closed due to poor storm water drainage. Public Services crews are working on it and will continue to do so until the problem is resolved.
The city has a combined sewer system – the sanitary and storm water drain into the same pipe. Residents should be aware that all city streets have restricted catch basin covers to prevent a sudden influx of water into the system thus over taxing it. Also any remaining leaves in the street may plug the already restricted covers. During all heavy rainfalls the Department of Public Services has crews out clearing catch basins to ensure that streets drain of water as soon as possible. The restricted catch basin covers slow the flow of water into the system, keeping the water on the streets, not in the basements.
The Public Services Department is monitoring this latest event. If you have any issues regarding the flooding of the streets or should experience a basement backup, please call the Public Services Department at (313) 343-2460 between 8:00 am and 4:00 pm Monday through Friday, otherwise contact the Public Safety Department at (313) 343-2400.
