Nationwide Emergency Alert System TEST, 11/9 @ 2pm
NATIONWIDE TEST of EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM
Wednesday, November 9, 2011 2:00 PM EST
The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) will conduct the first-ever nationwide TEST of the EMERGENCY ALERT SYSTEM (EAS) on Wednesday, November 9th, 2011 at 2:00 PM EST.
The TEST, scheduled for 2:00 PM EST on Wednesday, November 9th, will interrupt all regularly scheduled television, radio, cable and satellite broadcasts for a period of approximately 30 seconds. Viewers at that time may see a crawling message across their picture screen indicating "THIS IS A TEST".
The Emergency Alert System is an alert and warning system that can be activated by the President of the United States, as well as the national weather service, state and local officials, to provide immediate information to the general public of emergencies and potential dangers both nationally and regionally.
The purpose of the TEST is to access the reliability and effectiveness of the EAS as a way to notify the public in the event of emergencies.
