Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III reports that members of the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit,(SVU) and New Jersey Division of Parole, conducted a sex offender operation on Monday, October 31st. 2011.
Megan’s Law (sex offender) registrants that are on Parole Supervision for Life had a special parole condition that they were not allowed to participate in trick or treat activities and were subject to curfews.
On Monday, October 31st, 2011, personnel from Parole and HCPO SVU conducted home visits to a number of registered sex offenders. Over (30) registered offenders throughout Hunterdon County had verifications conducted at their registered addresses to confirm those on parole supervision for life were not participating in trick or treat activities.
There are five detectives in the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Special Victims Unit. The SVU routinely conduct address verifications as part of their sex offender tracking duties. The Prosecutor’s Office is tasked with monitoring all registered sex offenders in the county, as well as conducting notifications to law enforcement, schools, community organizations, and in some cases, notification on the Internet.
There are over one hundred registered offenders in Hunterdon County at any given time. In addition to keeping track of sexual offenders and investigating sexual assaults, the Special Victims Unit investigates offenses against children, abuse against the elderly, and those with special needs.
The Prosecutor’s Office has further dedicated this Unit to work with local schools in teaching children the dangers that lurk on social media sites. The instruction provides students in ways to prevent predators from accessing personal information. The SVU is also joining forces with the Federal Bureau of Investigation’s Cyber Crime Unit in an effort to apprehend child predators on the internet.
Quote Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III
“The crimes of abuse and sexual related offenses have no borders. Here in Hunterdon we have the same crimes being committed across the nation. We will continue to educate the public and use all our resources to seek justice for the victims and their families.”
