Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III and Tewksbury Township Police Chief Thomas Holmes announced the arrest of one suspect in connection to a bank robbery that occurred today in the Oldwick section of Tewksbury Township.
The Prosecutor is reporting that investigators will be charging Odell Taitt, age 32, of Denver, Pennsylvania, with the robbery. Additionally, Mr. Taitt is now a suspect in a separate attempted bank robbery that occurred today at the Wells Fargo Bank on South Street in New Providence. Mr. Taitt may also be responsible for additional robberies in surrounding states. The investigation is ongoing and additional charges are pending.
Prosecutor Kearns stated, “At 2:24 PM today, the suspect entered the PNC Bank on Lamington Road near the intersection of Route 523 and passed a note demanding cash. The bank is located next to Melick’s Farm Stand. The note passed by the suspect stated that he had a weapon, but none was shown during the robbery. The suspect was seen leaving the scene in a small silver car. An unspecified amount of cash was taken.”
The Prosecutor added, “Tewksbury Township Police Officers immediately initiated a statewide radio broadcast with the description of the suspect and vehicle. Bernards Township Police Officers observed a vehicle matching the suspect description on Route 78 a short while later and subsequently stopped the vehicle. The driver of that vehicle, Odell Taitt, was taken to the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office and questioned by Detectives from the HCPO Major Crimes Unit. Evidence obtained by Detectives resulted in Taitt being charged with the robbery. The investigation is ongoing.”
Mr. Taitt will be lodged without bail in the Hunterdon County Jail on outstanding fugitive warrants from Pennsylvania. Robbery complaints are forthcoming.
Tewksbury Township Police, Bernards Township Police, New Providence Police, and the FBI are all involved with the investigation at this time. Anyone with information should contact the Hunterdon County Prosecutor’s Office at 908-788-1129.
The filing of a criminal complaint is merely a step in the criminal justice process. The defendant is presumed innocent until the matter is resolved in a court of law.
Questions can be submitted to the Prosecutor via fax to 908-806-4618.
