MEDIA RELEASE 8/30/11: STORM RELATED SCAMS AND THEFTS BEING REPORTED AROUND STATE follow: http://tinyurl.com/3ua333v

Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns, III announced today that Jersey Central Power and Light reported that unknown suspects are attempting to steal downed wires for copper.
Prosecutor Kearns said, “These individuals are jeopardizing their own safety and that of the public, as well as hampering the storm restoration process. Residents are urged to be on the lookout for wire theft in their communities and call police if they see suspicious behavior around downed wires.”
In addition, it is being reported that individuals posing as tree contractors working for JCP&L are charging residents money for tree removal and leaving the area with the money without performing any work.
“JCP&L contractors never ask customers for money to clear downed trees and branches as part of the storm restoration process,” according to Kearns.
In addition, the prosecutor is warning residents of other possible scams being perpetrated around the state involving residents being approached by fraudulent contractors looking for storm cleanup work. The Prosecutor urges residents not to open their door for anyone they did not call under any circumstances.
Prosecutor Kearns added, “Anytime an unknown person arrives unannounced at your home this should be considered suspicious. Report all suspicious activity to the local police department immediately.”
