Hunterdon County Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III announced that Hunterdon County’s Law Enforcement and SWAT Team will receive specialized equipment through Homeland Security Funding.
The Hunterdon County SWAT Team is comprised of 15 officers from various departments that voluntarily serve on the team. The officers have passed specialized and mandated training.
Quote: Prosecutor Anthony P. Kearns III
We look forward to the Hunterdon County Board of Chosen Freeholders accepting this grant funded equipment. No county funds will be necessary for this equipment and will be available to all of Hunterdon’s municipal police departments. This equipment will protect Hunterdon officers and can save lives.
In 2008 U.S. Department Homeland Security mandated that 25% of the Homeland Security grant funding received by Hunterdon County be utilized for Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack deterrence, prevention and protection capabilities for law enforcement. Due to this mandate, a spending plan was developed and approved by the Office of Homeland Security for the purchase of:
The Sabre 4000 ($25,467.00), which is a portable trace detector that can detect threats from explosives, chemical warfare agents, toxic industrial chemicals or narcotics. This device will be maintained/used by the Hunterdon County SWAT Team as part of their tactical CBRN response and will be made available to specialized Federal/State/County/Local law enforcement as well as County specialized response units (bomb, hazmat, K9, narcotics, etc.).
The Hunterdon County SWAT Team will receive new ballistic vests ($36,141.60) and helmets ($14,632.80) to replace the same previously grant funded (2006) ballistic protection which is outside of the manufacturer’s warranty.
The Hunterdon County SWAT Team will receive new armor plates ($12,980.00) for both Team use as well as deployment to local patrol officers during critical incidents which require additional ballistic and or blast fragmentation protection.
Ballistic Shields ($14,334.30) will be purchased and distributed to all municipal police departments to provide an added level of protection for patrol officers responding to bomb threats, active shooter situations and other emergencies which require additional ballistic and or blast fragmentation protection.
