IMPORTANT POST STORM ADVISORY NOTICE
HURRICANE IRENE STORM ADVISORY
As you know, the Hurricane Irene Storm has severely impacted a vast area of our community. The heavy rains caused the Saddle River to be nearly 7 feet above flood stage and significant flooding occurred to many homes and roadways of the township. The flooding of streets and homes, and the accompanying waters into your home and businesses, may have caused you to have electrical and/or natural gas service disruption. This disruption may have caused your electrical service, hot water and other gas and electrical appliances to shut off.
IF YOU ARE EXPERIENCING LOSS OF GAS AND/OR ELECTRIC SERVICE, YOU ARE DIRECTED TO CALL PSE&G AT (800) 436-PSEG (7734) TO REPORT YOUR SPECIFIC SERVICE PROBLEM.
In order to restore natural gas service in your home, PSE&G representatives will need to enter your home to evaluate each and every gas appliance. In the event of the main gas meter serving your home, the meter and/or regulator valve that may be water damaged may require total replacement and the gas line to be drained. This is a time sensitive but necessary effort to ensure safety. PSE&G is concentrating on areas where whole communities or neighborhoods are affected and this process will continue through the week.
NOTE: PSE&G cannot evaluate or restore service until all water has been removed from your basement or where the appliance is located. Please use extreme caution if you are attempting to remove water from your basement and other areas. Carefully assess your electric circuits and service prior to entering basements or areas containing water.
After flooding and/or water damage, it is important to begin clean-up as soon as possible. The first priority is to get rid of the water, then any visible bulk dirt and other debris. Mold and mildew flourishes in wet conditions so it is important to get areas dried and disinfected as quickly as possible. A recommended disinfecting solution is ¾ cup of household bleach mixed with each gallon of water. When disinfecting heavily soiled areas, it is important to change the solution frequently to ensure effectiveness.
NOTE: FLOOD WATERS MAY BE CONTAMINATED. During any cleanup, wear heavy rubber gloves and rubber boots. After clean up, thoroughly wash hands with soap and water, wash your clothing in hot water and with ample detergent, and sanitize rubber gloves and boots with disinfectant.
Household debris and other solid waste should be placed at the curbs in front of your homes and businesses for prompt removal. The Township of Saddle Brook will be ensuring the prompt and continuing removal of the debris as needed.
The Township of Saddle Brook Governing Body, in collaboration with the Township’s Emergency services of the Office of Emergency Management, Police and Volunteer Fire Departments, Department of Public Works and Volunteer Ambulance Corps has been providing (and continue to provide appropriate services as needed.
