Hurricane Irene- Latest Emergency Management Update

Here are the most current reports regarding Hurricane Irene from the National Weaher Service.

Most likely track for the storm appears to be remaining off the coast which is better for Berks and Lehigh.

Heaviest rain/wind in Berks/Lehigh Saturday night into Sunday AM with rain ending around mid-afternoon Sunday

Possible 8” of rain across the Berks/LehighCounty

Sustained winds in excess of 30 mph with gusts over 50 mph

Small stream and urban flooding, particularly localized, is almost a certainty. River flooding remains a concern based solely on rainfall totals, but many variables play into the river crest, and predictions are only made 72 hours out.

The summary of a somewhat complex narrative is that things look better than they might, but we should not let our guard down yet.

Reminder: On a personal level, please help to share with your family and friends the need to have emergency supplies on hand (food, water, medications, etc.) for at least 72 hours. There are a lot of us out there, and if we each remind 2-3 people and ask that they remind 2-3 people, etc. the effect on overall community preparedness can be highly magnified. Individuals in low lying areas should have a “go bag” ready and be prepared to move quickly if flooding appears likely. This means having a place to go pre-planned, and having a plan for what to do with pets. Also, please remember to check early with friends or family who may be in need of additional support such as those who are elderly, disabled, or economically challenged.

Remember, please use commonsense, never drive through a flooded roadway and place yourself ,family or friends in danger. This is still a dangerous storm and there is still uncertainy of its track.

Additional information will be sent as appropriate.
