Residents are urged to prepare for the approach of Hurricane Irene.

Hurricane Irene Continues on Path Toward U.S. East Coast

OEM continues to closely monitor Hurricane Irene as it approaches the East Coast. As of 11 AM, Thursday, Hurricane Irene was passing over the Bahamas, and moving north northwest at 13 miles per hour. Irene is currently a Category 3 hurricane. While the forecast remains uncertain, there is now a strong possibility the area will experience hurricane or tropical storm conditions this weekend.

OEM urges residents to take steps to prepare for heavy rain, storm surge, and strong winds. Make sure your emergency supply kits and Go Bags are stocked and ready to go with supplies like water, non-perishable food, a first aid kit, flashlights, a battery-operated radio, and extra batteries.

Residents should take the time prior to the storms arrival to secure loose outdoor items that can become projectiles in high winds such as but not limited to garbage cans, BBQs, propane tanks, portable basketball hoops, backyard umbrellas and chairs.

Clear gutters of debris. In the event of power loss DO NOT attempt to run generators indoors due to the build up of potentially fatal carbon monoxide.

Do not attempt to cross flooded roadways.

Do not approach downed electrical lines

Continue to monitor local news media and weather outlets for up-to-the minute information on this potentially dangerous storm including its path, intensity and time frames.
