Green Bay Police Deploy Armadillo Armored Video Surveillance Vehicle to Assist with Chronic Nuisances

The Green Bay Police Department deployed their new Nuisance Abatement Video Surveillance Vehicle, the “Armadillo” today. The Armadillo is an armored truck that is equipped with video surveillance equipment. The intended purpose of the Armadillo is to restore peace and order to neighborhoods that are experiencing social disorder. The idea for the Armadillo was first conceived by the Peoria, IL police department to address chronic nuisances in that community. Some funding for our project was donated through grants and donations, including a $1400 donation from Neighbors Against Drugs and the Navarino Neighborhood Association.
It seems fitting therefore, that the Armadillo’s first deployment is in the Navarino Neighborhood. The location was chosen based on citizen complaints and department analysis of problems emanating from 1300 Doty Street. At 11am this morning the Armadillo was parked in front of the address and officers met with neighbors in that area to explain why the Armadillo was there. Several neighbors agreed to monitor activity in the neighborhood and the Armadillo. They will alert police if there are any problems.
There have been numerous calls for police service in that area, and specifically to the upper apartment at 1300 Doty Street within the last year. Most of the calls involve disturbances and noise complaints which dramatically affect the quality of life in that neighborhood. The last incident occurred August 15th, where a total of 11 police officers responded to the address for disorderly behavior. Multiple subjects were arrested for offenses such as obstructing an officer, resisting an officer, disorderly conduct, and outstanding arrest warrants. The landlord is working with the police department to correct the problems.
Police will continue to utilize the Armadillo to address future nuisance properties and assist neighborhoods in restoring peace and order, or in deterring possible drug activity, or other illegal behaviors. The Armadillo is equipped with a digital video recording system capable of recording events 24 hours a day.
