COMPTON SHERIFF, COMPTON FIRE DEPARTMENT AND BEST BUY HELP 4 YEAR OLD BURN VICTIM

On July 20, 2011, Compton Sheriff’s deputies and Fire Department personnel responded to a "Child on Fire" call on the 600 Block of West Corregidor Street in Compton. Upon arrival and contacting the child’s parents, Maria and Leonel Lopez, it was determined their four year old son, Kevin Lopez, had accidentally ignited himself on fire while spraying an aerosol based air freshener over a lit candle. This caused his clothing to ignite which ultimately caused his injuries.

Kevin was severely burned on his chest, back, thighs and right hand. He was transported to Long Beach Memorial Hospital and ultimately to Torrance Memorial Hospital where he is recovering. He is listed in stable condition with 3rd degree burns over 70% of his body. Doctors estimate he will be in the hospital for at least three months, where he will undergo a long list of skin graft surgeries.

Touched by the long and painful situation the child is facing, and the family’s economic hardship, Compton Sheriff’s Station personnel and Compton Fire Department have begun a fundraising campaign for the child and family.

With the recommendation of pediatric nurses and the efforts of Compton Station deputies, an Apple iPad was donated by Compton Best Buy General Manager Damien Cook. Deputy Jeff Lohmann from Compton Station, who responded to the incident that day, had the iPad loaded with interactive games to occupy Kevin’s time while he recuperates in the hospital. Deputy Lohman was deeply touched by the incident and said as a parent he could relate to the agony the parents must feel. The iPad will be used by the child for interactive games and movies during his long and extensive recovery. In addition to the iPad, various fundraisers are being planned in the near future to assist the family.

For more information, or if you are interested in making a personal donation to the Lopez family, please contact the Compton Sheriff’s Station – Community Relations Office at (310) 605-3502.
