Suspect Charged for Multiple Larcenies from Automobiles


Dearborn, Mi. —

On July 27, 2011 at approximately 2:00 am the Dearborn Police Department responded to the area of Schaefer and Ruby on report of a subject walking down the street checking vehicle door handles. The subject was described as a W/M, wearing a white t-shirt and jeans. Officers located a subject matching that description and began a surveillance of the subject.

Officers observed the subject approach several vehicles and pull on the door handles. Officers then observed Gill inside the passenger seat of a blue Chevy Malibu and he appeared
to be digging through the glove box and center-console areas inside the vehicle. The subject then exited the vehicle and quickly walked away. Officers subsequently arrested the subject who was identified as Donald Patrick Gill a 35 year old Melvindale resident.

Officers recovered property that had been taken from several vehicles in the area.

Gill was charged and arraigned on 3 counts of Felony Larceny from Auto, 1 count of Felony possession of a stolen Financial Transaction Device, 1 count of Felony Resisting and Opposing Officers and 2 Misdemeanor counts of B&E Automobile.

A preliminary exam has been set for August 5, 2011 at 9:00 am in the 19th District Court.

The Dearborn Police Department has received several reports of items being stolen out of unoccupied parked vehicles. Several of the reported larcenies involved vehicles with unlocked doors or open windows. These recent incidents have occurred primary in the west end of the city. All residents are asked to take steps to avoid becoming a victim of this crime of opportunity. The Dearborn Police Department would like to remind residents to do the following:

• Remember to keep your vehicle locked and windows rolled up even if the vehicle is parked in your driveway or in front of your home.
• Park your vehicle in your garage or in your driveway whenever possible.
• Do not leave valuables (GPS Units, MP3 Players, laptops, money, etc) visible in your vehicle. If possible, remove all valuables from your vehicle.
• Never leave any personal information in your vehicle such as vehicle title, registration, or insurance.
• Residents should avoid leaving their vehicles running unattended even for a short period.
• Be aware of your surroundings & trust your instincts
• Watch out for your neighbors
• Report any suspicious people or cars in your neighborhood to the police
• Examples of suspicious activity may include:
o Vehicles that you do not recognize as belonging in the area
o Vehicles that are observed circling the area
o People on foot who are not familiar to you
o People who are observed looking into vehicles or attempting to open vehicles
