Community Support Needed for State approval of an Assisted Living / Nursing Care Facility.

The City of Midlothian is in the process of trying to secure State approval for an Assisted Living/Nursing Care facility here. The licensing of these facilities is controlled by The Texas Department of Human Services (DHS). However, since 2002, a special waiver to permit new facilities is required. This waiver is based on community need. The developer applicant for the facility is Griffin Properties. View photos of recently completed facilities on their website at http://www.griffinprop.com/nursinghomes.html.

In the last ten years, the City has grown by over 10,000 people with a regional ISD area population of about 30,000 people. The elder population has grown by 135%. In the general 112 square miles served by the City, there are no existing facilities within ten miles that provide this care.

To support this effort, the City is requesting any person interested in this service to provide a letter of support. Letters should reflect your personal need for access to an elder care facility and your anticipated use of such a facility by you or a family member. Letters of support should be addressed to Mr. Joe Armstrong, Texas Department of Aging and Disability Services, Mail Code E-342, 701 West 51st St., P.O. Box 149030, Austin, Tx 78714. However, DO NOT MAIL THE LETTER, instead, deliver it to the City of Midlothian, Planning Department, 104 W. Ave E, Midlothian, TX 76065 or fax it to 972-775-7171 before August 15, 2011.

Dear Mr. Armstrong:

As a resident of Midlothian, Texas we are in great need for a long term care facility for the elderly that includes skilled nursing care. The city is growing rapidly and no such care currently exists here.

I am aware of a proposal by Griffin Properties to construct a 120 bed facility that will provide assisted living and nursing care for the elderly.

I urge you to grant the necessary waiver for this facility.

Sincerely,
