Malibu Man Confronts Home Burglar

Last Friday around noon, in the 1800 block of Manzanita Park Avenue, Malibu, after a resident returned home from a bicycle ride and was in the garage, he heard the sound of his front door closing. When he went to investigate, he came face to face with an unknown man carrying property which belonged to the victim and his wife.

The suspect ran away from the house to Las Flores Canyon Road, where the victim chased him and saw him drive away in an older-model red Toyota Camry.

The victim called 911 and reported the burglary. A short time later, responding deputies spotted the suspect driving the vehicle and saw him pull into a driveway in the 21300 block of Pacific Coast Highway, Malibu. There, deputies contacted the suspect and arrested him for Burglary. Subsequent to the arrest, deputies located suspected heroin in the suspect’s possession, for which he was additionally charged during the booking process.

Fortunately, all of the victim’s stolen property was recovered.

The suspect was identified as Matthew Veltri, male White/26 years old, of Inglewood. He was booked at Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station for Burglary and Possession of Narcotics. He was released on $50,000 bail and is scheduled to return to Malibu Court on 09-20-2011.

Through investigation, detectives learned Veltri entered the victim’s home through an unlocked front door while the victim was on his bicycle ride. Detectives also learned that, prior to the burglary, Veltri was seen driving slowly in the red Toyota Camry, through the victim’s neighborhood.

Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff’s Station personnel would like to remind residents to be aware of any suspicious people seen driving through neighborhoods. It is not uncommon for burglars to case houses, to determine if anyone is home prior to breaking in. If you see someone suspicious in your neighborhood, don’t hesitate to call Malibu/Lost Hills Station (818-878-1808) to report it. Please be sure that all the doors to your homes, garages, outbuildings and cars are locked when you leave.
