Man airlifted after injury in the San Gabriel River, Angeles National Forest

Sheriff's Aero Bureau Air Rescue 5 arrived minutes after being informed of a 9-1-1 call of a serious injury at the San Gabriel River at East Fork Road in the Angeles National Forest at 5:03PM, Monday.

Witnesses reported that a 46-year old man who had been drinking alcohol with friends had either fallen or dove into the rushing wate of the San Gabriel River. He struck a rock and was unresponsive and laying face down in the water.

Witnesses moved him a short distance, but were hampered in their efforts due to it being a very treacherous area of the river and that it was difficult to move the man as he weighed well over 300 pounds. Witnesses began CPR and called 9-1-1.

Fortunately, U.S. Forest Service personnel and Sheriff's Air-5 were nearby and arrived within minutes.

Two Sheriff's Emergency Services Detail (Special Enforcement Bureau) paramedic deputies were hoisted from the Air-5 helicopter down to the ground, and they resuscitated the victim. They were all then hoisted into the aircraft, and transported to an area hospital where he is listed in stable condition.

This portion of the Angeles National Forest is an unincoporated area policed by the San Dimas Sheriff's Station of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.
