EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING BY NWS.

THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE IN UPTON HAS ISSUED AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH... WHICH IS IN EFFECT THROUGH FRIDAY EVENING.

* LOCATIONS... NEW YORK CITY... ALL OF NORTHEAST NEW JERSEY AND THE LOWER HUDSON VALLEY INCLUDING ORANGE... PUTNAM... ROCKLAND AND WESTCHESTER COUNTIES.

* HAZARDS... EXCESSIVE HEAT WITH AFTERNOON TEMPERATURES OF 95 TO 100 DEGREES THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AFTERNOONS.

* HEAT INDEX VALUES... UP TO AROUND 105 DEGREES THURSDAY AFTERNOON AND UP TO AROUND 110 DEGREES FRIDAY AFTERNOON.

* TIMING... THURSDAY AND FRIDAY AFTERNOON AND EVENINGS MAINLY FROM NOON UNTIL 10 PM EACH DAY

* IMPACTS... POTENTIAL IMPACTS INCLUDE HEAT DISORDERS FOR CHILDREN... THE ELDERLY AND PEOPLE PERFORMING PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES DURING THE PEAK HEATING OF THE DAY.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

AN EXCESSIVE HEAT WATCH MEANS THAT THE COMBINATION OF HEAT AND HUMIDITY COULD CREATE A DANGEROUS SITUATION IN WHICH HEAT ILLNESSES ARE POSSIBLE. TAKE EXTRA PRECAUTIONS IF YOU WORK OR SPEND TIME OUTSIDE. WHEN POSSIBLE... RESCHEDULE STRENUOUS ACTIVITIES TO EARLY MORNING OR EVENING. KNOW THE SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF HEAT EXHAUSTION AND HEAT STROKE. WEAR LIGHT WEIGHT AND LOOSE FITTING CLOTHING WHEN POSSIBLE AND DRINK PLENTY OF WATER.

TO REDUCE RISK DURING OUTDOOR WORK THE OCCUPATIONAL SAFETY AND HEALTH ADMINISTRATION RECOMMENDS SCHEDULING FREQUENT REST BREAKS IN SHADED OR AIR CONDITIONED ENVIRONMENTS. ANYONE OVERCOME BY HEAT SHOULD BE MOVED TO A COOL AND SHADED LOCATION. HEAT STROKE IS AN EMERGENCY... CALL 9-1-1.
