If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding opportunity, and be able to give back to the community at the same time, then consider becoming a volunteer with the Sheriff’s Dept. The Norwalk Sheriff’s Station is currently recruiting qualified applicants for volunteer work. The station has over 100 volunteers but is looking to enlarge the program. There are many different positions available including:

• Volunteers on Patrol
• Front desk
• Detective bureau
• Secretariat
• Traffic office
• Whittier Sub-Station
• La Mirada Sub-Station
• Norwalk Superior Court information desk
• Sheriff’s Museum at the academy in Whittier
• Mentor with the PRIDE youth program
• Numerous events throughout the county

As a volunteer, you will be working hand and hand with the personnel at the station and the deputies on patrol. The Volunteers on Patrol assist the field deputies at traffic accidents, conduct vacation checks on houses, assist at crime scenes and command posts, and respond to emergency situations throughout the county. Our VOP’s were deployed to the “Station Fires” in 2009 and assisted with patrolling evacuated neighborhoods.

Sheriff Baca believes that the civilian volunteers are an invaluable resource and has directed the coordinators at all sheriff’s station to increase our numbers.

The minimum age requirement is 18 yrs old. A background investigation is conducted and certain offenses will prevent applicants from being hired. All volunteers are required to work a minimum of 16 hours a month to stay active in the program. Uniforms are purchased by the volunteers upon being hired.
