"Operation Dry Water" Boating Under the Influence (BUI)Enforcement: Castaic Lake, Pyramid Lake #LASD @OpDryWater

UPDATE:

RESULTS OF: Operation Dry Water
Posted: June 28th, 2011

On Saturday, June 25, 2011, through Sunday, June 26, 2011, deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Parks Bureau participated in “Operation Dry Water.”

This nationally coordinated weekend of boating under the influence (BUI) detection and enforcement was aimed at reducing the number of alcohol and drug related accidents and fatalities. The goal was to foster a stronger and more visible deterrent to alcohol and drug use on the water in an effort to educate boaters about boating under the influence.

The Sheriff’s Department increased its presence at both Castaic Lake and Pyramid Lake during Operation Dry Water by conducting traffic stops and B.U.I. sobriety check points.

These led to the following:

06/25/11 (Pyramid Lake operation) 1- BUI arrest, 8 boats contacted with 31 boaters on board.

06/26/11 (Castaic Lake operation) 1- BUI arrest, 14 boats contacted with 55 boaters on board.

With the exception of the two individuals that were arrested, all the other boaters contacted were happy and thanking us for the enforcement and keeping the lake safe. We had numerous boaters tell us that they were aware of the BUI checkpoints from hearing it on the radio, friends calling and advising them and seeing the signs posted when they drove into the lake facility. Additionally, they were also told about the BUI checkpoint being conducted that day at the lake entry kiosk (by park staff), when they paid their entry fee.
