Barricades are for Your Safety Driving through Construction Zones may be Dangerous and Costly

Construction crews have emplaced barricades around the City to keep them and you safe. Unfortunately, many people continue to disregard these signs and, at times, even move them aside to drive through the zone.

The Police Department would like to remind motorists to refrain from driving through construction zones no matter how inconvenient a detour might be. “Construction crews need to finish their work as safely as possible but this is sometimes difficult while cars drive through the zone”, said Police Chief Steve Hensel. At times, construction work has made a particular area impassible or even dangerous.

Barricades and warning devices help guide traffic and the decisions of motorists. Referring to the work underway on East 13th Street, Hensel added, “Motorists who move barricades create a special concern. They may not fully understand the conditions ahead and, by moving the barricades, they place themselves and others at risk.” In addition, “we’ve seen both roadwork and vehicles severely damaged when drivers disregard these signs… We’ve also written more than a few citations,” Hensel concluded.

When permitted by signage, residents and patrons of businesses within a work zone may drive to and from these locations; however, transit through the zone is not considered “local traffic” and is illegal.
